About Us
DeSoto opened in Gainesville in August 2003 with 9th and 10th grades, and added 11th grade in 2004-2005. DeSoto is specifically designed for high school students who have reading and language difficulties, including:
  • auditory processing
  • word decoding
  • oral and written expression
  • reading comprehension
  • dyslexia
Our educational program is designed to address the specific needs of our students by maintaining a low student/teacher ratio, small classes of less than 20 students, and by using innovative assistive technologies. Our curriculum, which includes the Sunshine State standards, is presented in different ways accommodating the different learning styles of our students.
DeSoto has specialists in reading, occupational therapy, speech/language pathology, and a full-time aide.
We believe all children can learn in an atmosphere that is caring and supportive.

DeSoto is a free public charter high school. We offer:

  • small classes
  • certified teachers
  • standard 24 credit diploma
  • a warm and supportive environment
DeSoto offers 9th, 10th, and 11th grades for the 2004-2005 school year. Twelfth grade will be added 2005-06.
School hours are 8:25 - 2:40.
We follow the Alachua County public schools calendar.
DeSoto has a uniform shirt and a dress code.
Free/reduced lunch is available to qualified families.
